I closed the front door, expecting silence inside the small house. Ollie’s car was out front, but all the front lights were off, and I couldn’t remember his schedule for the weekend, so I assumed he might have gone to bed already.

I kicked off my shoes and hung up my coat and as soon as I turned around, Eric took me by the back of the neck and pulled me into a kiss. My mouth opened, welcoming his hot tongue. By the time we pulled apart, I didn’t think I could remain standing if not for his hands on me.

Then, a dim light flashed in the hallway and Ollie stepped out, wearing only his pajama bottoms. He stopped as soon as he saw me. “Didn’t expect you home tonight.”

“Yeah, well…” I looked to Eric, unsure of what to say. Coming back here had been his idea, but he didn’t say a word.

“Everything okay?” Ollie continued to the sink where he grabbed two glasses from the cabinet and began filling them with water.

“I guess I had a panic attack.”

Ollie’s eyebrows rose, and he turned to look at Eric, then me. “I can stay up if you need—”

“No. Go back to…” I waved at the water glasses, assuming the second glass wasn’t for me or Eric. Ollie wouldn’t have stumbled out here in the middle of the night to get us water.

“Pretty sure he’ll survive a few minutes.” His eyes darted to Eric again—a quick glance to gage his reaction that I’d seen a hundred times. But Eric didn’t react to any of it, remaining relaxed as he leaned against the small kitchen island.

Ollie’s senior year had been hell after word got out about his boyfriend, but sometimes it never occurred to me that his sexuality might be news.

“You’re staying?” Ollie asked Eric.

“Yeah, that was my plan.”

“In that case, we’ll try to keep the noise down.” Ollie nodded, then he nudged me in the shoulder with his elbow. “Knock if you need me.”

“Good night, Ollie,” I said.

“Night.” He kissed me on the temple as he passed. “I made chicken salad. It’s in the fridge if you’re hungry.”
